Roughly 50 vehicles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.

Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The liquid had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.

Police then discovered many other marked automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.

Officials report early analysis indicate the liquid was likely human blood.

"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; investigators are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the occurrence," they added.

City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.

An important official stated the incident made him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.

"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine victims by a assailant focusing on residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
