Our Top Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Top Position.

On the surface, this album might appear closer to a difficult scholarly quiz than a new popular music album from a musician whose previous hit featured an international K-pop icon. Divided across four separate parts and voiced in thirteen languages, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus investigating feminine mystery, religious ascent, and physical transformation, frequently via the prism of different saintly figures. The dissolution of a relationship—a theme handled with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—is shot skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush presence of a full symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter within a long list of collaborators. The pure ambition by itself makes the efforts of contemporary pop stars appear quite laughable.

Transcending Academic Exercise

The fact that this album manages to transcend dry intellectual chin-stroking feels nearly a miracle, with full credit going to Rosalía. While this is not the first time project to alchemize historical sounds with the present, the stakes feel far greater here, and the balancing act more dramatic. What truly raises this fourth album, outside of its multilayered melodies, dense compositions, and engrained theatricality, is an essential spirit of fun. Similar to the legendary Björk during her height, there is a wondrous sense to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener up in its whirlwind. When she's breaking your heart in two, the listener still desire to stay right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

This exuberant spirit shines clearly during a stunning piano-led song about Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for several moments. Then, all the music drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful giggle and a declaration before a comically over-the-top string crescendo crashes down with comedic force. The track then segues to the frenetic single featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from none other than herself.

"The charm with Lux is that you never quite understand—or even wish to predict—what it is going to next."

Nearly every track finishes at a completely distinct point than where it began. A track explores the transient nature of celebrity over a delicate symphony before disintegrating into electronic chaos. Another, a cut that recalls her earlier trap-infused work begins out dark and sinister, featuring menacing beats, before sudden traditional handclaps and a heavenly choir arrive to soften the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Pop

A key balancing act on the album involves straddling the gap between bold experimentation and mainstream accessibility. This is no coincidence that it has become her highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy hits. A song sung entirely in English swells on a refrain that feels to gather increasingly infectious hooks while it spirals skyward. That feat is echoed by another powerful track that expands and constricts, intertwining layered tunes like an intricate weave.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural honesty of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on smile, like a storybook character concealing a blade: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Ears

Lux is pop on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for high Art amid of impending artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious elevation, crafting a dramatic spectacle that masterfully controls its inherent excess. This is an abundant well of hidden gems that requires patience to fully mine but doesn't feels like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 felt like a meager meal, this record is a sumptuous banquet at which the guests at it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred wine, flutter from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from pop's truly endlessly creative visionary.
