The fast bowler Set to Play a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
